Also called Spermaceti Cove on some charts, locals just call it "The
Island" or Skull Island. I'm told it was called Skeleton Hill Island
because it was one of the locations used to bury people from Ellis Island
that died as a result of certain diseases. It is just south of
Horseshoe Cove on the inside of Sandy
Hook. It is small and has many hazards and access should only be
attemped by those with detailed local knowledge. Nearly every week, boaters
run aground or damage their props and outdrives on the many rocks
in this area. The mayor and some of the local natives have requested
that specific navagation information on this location be removed. Look
at the pictures and save yourself a bent prop.
Paul Scharff Photography has a nice picture of the island taken of its
west side.
